GARAGE RENOVATION - PHASE ONE COMPLETE
Phase one of the garage renovation is complete. A utilitarian budget-sensitive renovation of an unfinished garage into bike parking, wood shop, and ceramics studio for vitrifiedstudio.
Two new walls divide the space for the separate functions. Bikes enter through the existing door to be efficiently stored on the wall. Utilizing an existing door to create a new pocket door separates the bike room from the updated wood shop space with access for larger equipment & materials through the existing garage door. The USB was chosen as a durable material where wood shop materials and other objects would be in regular contact with the wall. Also, as trim at the pocket door opening where wood shop materials and equipment would regularly be passing through. A new exterior door leads from the garden into the ceramics studio creating separation from the dust of the woodshop.
The entire structure was structurally upgraded, braced, and the entire rotting sill plate replaced. The walls were insulated before sheathing including the interior walls allowing for efficient heating of individual spaces in the cold winter months. The formerly non-code compliant electrical was upgraded with a new subpanel, and all new electrical runs including a 240amp run for the ceramics studio kiln.
This project was designed and built by MSA and vitrifiedstudio with the exception of electrical by NW Electrical Design LLC.
Phase two will be exterior improvements including awnings over the studio and garage door openings to protect from the rainy winter months in the Pacific Northwest, exterior painting (different colors), and new roofing.
